1. Design Concept

Based on the approved strategic recommendation and territory, the Lead Designer develops the overall Design Concept, by showing an indicative cover, opening pages, section dividers and other key spreads. Concepts may also be presented for key content like the Value Creation Model. (NB: Sometimes this is done in two rounds.)

One to three different concepts may be shown, including one that may stretch the client. For each one the Lead Designer explains what the design thinking is and why it works from a theme, key messages, audience-need and digital-first perspective.

The Design Concept includes defining the recommended approach to grid/layout, photography, illustrations, animation, online application, folios, pull-out quotes, graphs, and charts, etc.

  • All design as shown for digital-first thinking. e.g. landscape, including any page navigation and animation/video content; with consideration for online accessibility considerations.

The Strategist and AD review and provide feedback.

The Lead Designer, Strategist and AD present the design concept(s) to the client and explain how it delivers on the brief, strategy and agreed territory.

The client provides feedback and further refines are made to the selected concept.

If required, the concept is re-presented to the client for final sign-off.

The Lead Designer and AD using the concept to brief the Artwork team of the territory and concept and what’s coming up and when.
